TheFarlands.Net is going “Pink for October” in support of Breat Cancer Awareness Month. The initiative was started by Matthew Oliphant of UsabilitiyWorks.org to raise awareness for breast cancer. The general goal is to get people thinking about breast cancer and how to fight it. There are a number of ways you can show your support by:

Donating to a breast cancer charity like the Susan G. Komen Foundation

Going Pink for October on your web site

Giving one of the growing number of survivors a hug.

We owe special thanks to Teresa Maree of ScribbleScratch.com for her fabulous WordPress themes, including this special Pink for October design. You’ll be seeing a lot of her work around here as Christy and I really like her stuff.

Madelyn went to the dentist for the first time and did wonderful. She has 20 teeth, a bit of an overbite and no cavities. Our visit at Nashua Dentistry for Children was excellent! Jodi and Dr Tony took excellent care of Maddie. Madelyn received a book in the mail explaining about her visit and all the terms she would hear during her visit. I don’t remember the dentist ever being so much fun! I forgot my camera of course, but she had on sunglasses and got to hold and turn on Mr Thirsty. I was very proud of my brave little, no big, girl.

On Wednesday the 20th of September, I will be receiving a new cornea for my right eye. This surgical procedure follows nearly 7 years of rapidly advancing Keratoconus. While I was doing some looking on the net for more information about Corneal Transplants I found that quite a few people have chronicled their transplant story. In fact, this link was very informative. Of particular interest to me was that Larry Wall and Mandy Patinkin have also had corneal transplants. Larry Wall is the founder of the programming language Perl while Mandy Patinkin is best known (at least to me) for the immortal line, “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Moles are commonly known as dark spots or irregularities in the skin. Some people are born with moles, and others appear over time. They are usually benign (non-cancerous) but some moles prove to be a melanoma, or skin cancer when a biopsy is done. It is best to get medical advice if your mole changes shape or size, is irregularly shaped, asymmetrical, protrudes, itches, becomes painful or bleeds. Some melanomas begin in the form of a mole. If caught early, the melanoma may be removed completely, thereby reducing the risk of further skin cancer.

Recently during a routine physical, my doctor spotted an irregular mole and referred me to a dermatologist. Although that mole was not a concern, another mole was. During my visit the mole was cut out to its full depth and then sutured. The mole is then sent to a laboratory for a biopsy to determine if it is cancerous or benign. Odds are 1:100,000 the mole is cancerous. I felt like a Sesame Street episode, “Which one of these things doesn’t belong..” – the biggest inconvenience so far is explaining to Maddie that mommy can’t swim for 10 days. Bring on the rain!

Sun Tips: Slip, Slop, Slap. Slip on a dark colored shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat. Try to stay out of the sun between 10-2.
